The History of the Atrium Hotel at Orange County Airport

As Orange County’s oldest landmark hotel, The Atrium Hotel at the Orange County Airport was the first hotel to open its doors in May 1970 as the Airporter Inn.

Originally owned by the Duffy Family, the hotel sits on 6.5 acres of MacArthur Boulevard. Founder Richard E. Duffy began construction in 1968 on what was the original site of the Airporter Inn owned by the Irvine Company.  The Irvine Company also owned the entire undeveloped parcel around the hotel before the area was incorporated into the city of Irvine in 1971.

Throughout the 1970s the hotel was a popular site for television press conferences attended by both local and national government officials.  Former Senator John Tunney, former Governor Jerry Brown, former President Ronald Reagan, and White House aides for the late president Richard Nixon were just some of the attendants.

Then what was known as the Orange County Airport, was making headlines of its own. The Orange County Airport (now John Wayne Airport) was a popular site for stunt pilots to film movies. It was also a place to meet various celebrity aviation pioneers, including legendary Howard Hughes and Eddie Martin of Martin Aviation. Martin built the first landing strip at the Airport after World War I, which eventually paved the way for the successful commercial airline/aviation business.

 In 1992, Golden Hotels Limited Partnership purchased the hotel from the Duffy Family. A $4.5 million renovation took place from 1992 – 1998. Focal points of the renovation include a dramatic waterfall, with fountains and a two-story atrium lobby, and a pyramidal skylight.

The Atrium Hotel underwent its most recent renovation in 2020 and 2021,  with an emphasis on highlighting some of its unique & charming characteristics while showcasing local artists in our community. 

 Today you can still enjoy the warm hospitality from our staff and the beautiful tropical setting of this family-owned “gem” in the heart of Orange County!

We have a 24 Hour Cancellation Policy. If you wish to cancel or modify a reservation, you must do so by 1 day prior to your arrival date. If you cancel or modify post the expiration of the Cancellation Period or you fail to show up, a no-show charge will be levied on your credit card for one full night.

Please be advised the property requires a USD 75 refundable deposit upon check-in. Please contact the hotel for more details.

This property is privately owned, and the management reserves the right to refuse service to anyone and will not be responsible for accidents or injury to guests or for loss of money, jewelry, or valuables of any kind. Once checked in, no cancellations. All linens are inventoried: missing or damaged linens will be charged. Any damages to the hotel property will be charged an additional fee upon assessment. We are pet-friendly. Any damages to the hotel property will be charged an additional fee upon assessment. This is a non-smoking property. We do have smoking room types. Guest acknowledges that smoking and vaping is not allowed in the non-smoking guest room or common areas. If anyone in the guest's party smokes or vapes, the guest hereby expressly authorizes hotel management to charge the credit card the amount to reimburse the property for the additional cost of cleaning a guest room. If your reservation has been paid in advance or you elect to pay by cash, a security deposit via credit card will be required upon check-in and will be charged in the event that damages outlined herein occur. The hotel takes a credit preauthorization but does not accept cash deposits.
